Quick Tips to Select the Best Golf Cart Battery Of 2024

Voltage: Golf cart batteries have 4V, 6V, 12V, or 24V. you just need to see on the user manual of your golf cart which one should be more efficient for your golf cart. Similarly, you can check out the Ah (ampere per hour) on the user manual to get an idea of how much is needed.

for e.g: I use 4 x 12 Volts batteries for my 48V golf cart, which needs 500 AH of power

Installation and maintenance ease: Your selected battery should be easy to install and should require little to no maintenance. I suggest you buy the gel battery with a spill valve so that you don’t have to change the water or maintain it.

Temperature Sensors: A good battery should have warm and cold sensors so that it can work even in harsh conditions.

Warranty, life span, and customer support: Your selected unit should have at least a 1-year warranty with quick customer support.

Also, it should be durable and long-lasting enough to provide you with great performance for at least 3–5 years

Safe and environmentally friendly: Safety and the environment are our first priorities; make sure to select a unit that is safe and emits little to no amount of hazardous gases.

Used or Newer one: Always purchase a newer one; you can purchase a used one if you have a tight budget.

Size and weight: Size should be compact and easy to fit, however, the weight is the most crucial part; it should be medium, not too heavy or lightweight because we have to balance our vehicle

How to Buy The Best Golf Cart Battery

After testing multiple batteries we have made a checklist of factors that should be fulfilled in order to get maximum lasting power within an affordable price tag.

Without further ado lets, have a look at our checklist.

How To Test A New Golf Cart Battery?

Testing a new golf cart battery is essential, our team’s first task is to run several tests like the voltmeter test, lasting and charging test, etc.

I know many people don’t have access to several tools, still, they can do basic tests like charging and discharging or they can get help from their handy friends.

What Type Of Battery And How Much Voltage Should It Have?

Firstly check out the charger of your golf cart, if it has 6 volts make sure to select a 6 volts battery, it is important to check the cross-compatibility of a 12 volts battery that may not be charged perfectly with a 6 volts charger.

Below is our analysis of the battery type make sure to have a look.

  • Lead-acid or flooded batteries can provide you with very little efficiency because they have 50% depth of discharge (DoD), also they are very cheap, and better to leave them if you want to get higher performance.
  • Sealed lead-acid (SLA) Gel and AGM batteries have greater efficiency as they have 80% DoD. Though the capacity is the same as a flooded battery but you will get greater efficiency by spending a few more bucks.
  • Lithium batteries are the most efficient ones with very high DoD but they are expensive.
Type Of Batteries

Note: I personally prefer SLA (Sealed lead-acid batteries), they are budget-friendly, efficient, and can last longer than a flooded battery

Voltage:

Voltage is the power a golf cart battery can exert. You may find several capacity batteries like 6v, 8v,12v, 24v, etc. but you have to make a combination that can support your golf cart.

For e.g. you have a 48 volts golf you can make the following combination.

  1. 12Vx4 = 48V
  2. 6Vx8  = 48V
  3. 4Vx12 = 48

You can include any batteries in your pack but make sure that the final sum should be 48V

You can find voltage requirements on the user manual of your golf cart, you can see my golf cart’s voltage and ampers requirements.

Voltage and amperes chart of my Onward 2 passenger golf cart

I can install 6Vx8, 4×12, or 12Vx4, but I have installed a 6Vx8 combination as suggested by the manufacturers.

Amperes:

Amperes reflect how much a golf cart can travel, the higher the ampere higher the mileage.

Let’s have a look at our amperes and voltage table.

NO: of BatteriesVoltage of EachTotal VoltageTotal AmpsTravel DIstance
124484507 – 8 Miles
684880013 – 14 Miles
412486009 – 11 miles
663665011 – 12 miles
Amperes and voltage table

Temperature Sensors:

Temperature sensors are essential if you are living in a warm or cold region. In cold regions where the temperature becomes -10 or more, then the cold sensor helps to provide the desired efficiency by providing signals to your battery.

Similarly in warm regions where the temperature is more than 45 the warm sensors will also shoot signals to the battery to enhance the performance.

Charging Speed:

Your selected golf cart battery should be charged perfectly, if it takes too much time make sure to connect it with a voltmeter to identify whether it works properly or not. if you got slightly less voltage even after full charge, just replace it.

For e.g.: A normal 12V battery charges fully at 12.2 or 12.3 volts, if it provides 11.5V you should consult with the manufacturer.

Price Tag:

It depends, a lower capacity battery can be purchased from 50 – 120 bucks and a higher capacity battery can cost you 150 to 500 bucks.

Though lower capacity batteries are not that bad they can last for 1-2 years perfectly but you will get low mileage you can only drive a few miles, however, a higher capacity battery will not only last longer but also provide greater mileage

Weight And Dimensions:

Compact and Medium weight golf cart batteries are more suitable as compared to bulky ones because they may need more space, your golf cart’s engine may need to produce more power because of the high load, which causes some engine faults.

On the other hand, your battery shouldn’t be too light since you are going to drive it on a golf course so it needs to be stable. Too light batteries that have 5-10 lbs may not provide you desired stability; however 20 – 60 lbs. are best to get higher stability.

Maintenance Free:

Try to purchase a gel battery with a spill valve so that you don’t need to do maintenance like pour acid water, clean terminals, etc.

Warranty And Customer Support:

Well-reputed manufacturers like Universal Power, expert power, etc. will provide you with great customer support and a long-lasting warranty of 1-3 years or more. Depends on the price tag and quality of the battery.

A few tips to use the warranty properly.

  • Read the instructions of manufacturers about the battery; make sure to read them carefully.
  • Don’t dismantle the battery if it still has a warranty.
  • Call customer support after getting any problem.

When Should I Replace My Golf Cart Battery?

I am doing the following test to identify whether my golf cart battery is in working condition or should be replaced.

Voltmeter test: I simply connect a voltmeter and check out the voltage of the fully charged battery, if I found a huge voltage drop it is a strong sign to replace my battery.

For e.g.: A battery of 12 volts should be fully charged at 12.1V – 12.3V, but after a certain time it is fully charged at 10.5V which means the battery is dead, it doesn’t have the capacity to hold power.

Inspect the physical condition of the Battery: If the physical condition of the battery is rough like its middle is enlarged, the cover is broken, some liquids emit out, etc. then it should be replaced.

Golf cart does not cover the desired distance: Obviously, a user can detect the desired distance properly, e.g. I am driving a golf cart for 7 miles with a single charge and after some time I can cover only 4.5 miles which means the battery needs a voltmeter test.

Note: A good battery should at least provide 7 miles with a single charge.

Increased charging time: If your battery takes a long time to charge than usual you should take a voltmeter test it is a strong cause of charging and power loss.

Golf cart reduces speed and power: When the battery becomes old or dead, you may feel the lower speed, and power, or in the worst case, your golf cart may stop after a certain distance.

How To Clean Or Maintain The Golf Cart Battery?

Though the manufacturer claimed that their battery is maintenance-free which is true for some of the high-quality batteries, still we have to inspect our batteries for at least after 6-month to avoid any risks of failure.

Below is the step-by-step guide to cleaning and maintaining your top-rated golf car battery

  1. Read the manufacturer’s manual to get a proper idea of what is prohibited.
  2. Ware a pair of gloves, take an anti-corrosion distilled water, and start cleaning its outer body by sprinkling some distilled water or you can clean it with a wet cloth.
  3. Charge it regularly, so that your battery can’t reach below 25%.
  4. Check out the wires if you find any broken ones, replace them.
  5. Clean the terminals and rust from the connections with the help of sandpaper etc. Also, apply silicon paste on the top of the terminals to avoid oxidation.

How To Store The Golf Cart Battery?

  • If you are in the coldest region make sure to fully charge it and place it in a slightly warm place.
  • If you are in a warm region make sure to charge it half and place it in a slightly cold place

We have created a general guide about how to store a battery make sure to have a look

Should I Purchase Used or Brand New?

I know many golf cart owners who have purchased a used one and it lasts only for 1 – 2 months because they haven’t done Voltmeter and other essential tests. Though used batteries sometimes work fine if your budget is tight but I highly recommend you to get a newer one.

Still, if you are going to purchase a used one please follow the following checklist.

  • After charging it, do a volt meter test and compare it with its voltage value if you find a huge difference leave it.
  • Your selected battery shouldn’t be more than 6 months old.
  • Physical condition should be clean. it should be leakage-free.
  • Its terminal should be clean.
  • Should be charged and discharged perfectly.
