How to Reduce Generator Fuel Consumption? 5 Proven Tips
In this article, we will tell you How to Reduce Generator Fuel Consumption by following 5 proven tips. These tips are valid for all types of generators running on any kind of fuel
There are multiple reasons like poor maintenance, cheap fuel, overloading, and underload why a generator consumes more fuel than usual.
In the modern era where a 2.5KW generator like Westinghouse iGen2500 can run for 12 hours at 25% load on a 1-gallon tank, you should expect a better performance from the generator as well if it is new.
But, most of us experience extra fuel consumption from our generators whether they are new, or old sometimes. Even the most efficient inverter portable generators can eat up extra fuel due to some internal problems. That is completely normal.
Don’t worry, we have written 5 proven tips to reduce generator fuel consumption by some margin.
How To Reduce Generator Fuel Consumption
1. Don’t Overload:
Overloading can not only cause overheating and internal damage, but it is one of the main reasons for extra fuel consumption.
The engine can eat 25 to 30% more fuel than normal when putting too much pressure on your generator.
Suppose you have an 1800 running watts generator and you are using 1700+ watts on a regular basis. The engine will overload because we have to leave some watts unused to let the generator run efficiently.
Even if you have a high-quality generator like Champion or Honda, don’t overload it. Find a sweet spot where fuel efficiency is good.
2. Service Your Generator And Take Out The Carbon Deposits:
A generator and a car run on the same principle. Regular maintenance and service will not only ensure longer runtime (improves fuel consumption), but it also save us from a lot of possible challenges.
I maintain and service all of my generators on my own, but you hire a professional if you don’t know anything about generators.
Anyways, proper servicing will identify potential causes of fuel consumption and faulty parts.
A few things are a must during maintenance like cleaning or replacing the spark plug and cleaning the air filter, and the carburetor.
These things directly affect fuel consumption. If these things work properly, it will surely increase the lifespan of your generator.
When you notice thick black smoke coming from the exhaust, it is caused by carbon deposits attached to the piston top, engine valves, injector valve set, and other parts.
During maintenance, the first thing you would want to do is to clean carbon deposits, because they increase fuel consumption.
3. Proper Ventilation:
This is one of the most obvious reasons. Proper ventilation ensures fresh oxygen in the combustion chamber which leads to the proper and complete burning of the air-fuel mixture.
If the generator can’t get enough fresh oxygen, the engine will consume more fuel and it will become inefficient.
You may have noticed that a generator at sea level works more efficiently than a generator on a mountain. The more fresh oxygen the generator consumes, the less fuel it will burn.
4. Don’t Underload
Like overload, underload can also be a cause of extra fuel consumption. The generator engine consumes more fuel to keep going than it would when going at the right speed (idle mode).
Not having enough load placed on the unit can cause a backfire. The engine will consume more fuel.
Ideally, you should operate your generator at 50% load. Most modern portable inverter generators can save fuel at 25% load as well on eco-mode but don’t underload your unit.
5. Use The Right Fuel
Cheaper can cause the machine to be less efficient. You will end up buying more fuel than usual. Cheap fuels leave more carbon deposits on the piston top and engine valves, causing more problems.
I always use quality 87-octane-rating fuel in all of my generators. Quality fuel causes the machine to run efficiently by consuming the proper amount of air-fuel mixture. I have that theory, cheaper fuels burn faster than a standard 87 octane rating 10% ethanol fuel for generators.
Final Words
The right way to save fuel is to not overload your generator. Calculate how many watts are required and run the unit according to it.
Unless you need to run some heavy-ass motor-driven appliances, switch the generator to ECO-MODE. ECO/IDLE mode is a feature to reduce the RPM to save fuel and reduce noise.
The 5 tips I mentioned have worked for me and I am sure they will work for you too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the generator use more fuel when underloaded?
All modern generators are designed to carry a load where they are most efficient. Some are most efficient at 50% to 75%. As the load decreases, generators run too rich, adding too much fuel into the combustion chamber.
How much fuel does a generator use per hour?
A standard 5KW generator consumes 0.75 to 0.8 gallons per hour. Some are more efficient as well like Westinghouse Igen 4500 and Champion 4500.
