Predator Vs Honda Generators – [Why Honda Costs More?]

As an engineer and expert in the generator industry, I found it difficult to compare Predator vs Honda generators due to their almost identical performances.

Honda is one of the biggest manufacturing companies in the world and their portable generators are elite among the competition.

Predator generators on the other hand are a cheaper solution with almost the same built quality and performance.

Both generators use CO sensors to detect the amount of carbon monoxide to automatically shut off, both have parallel capabilities, quiet operation, strong body, and less maintenance.

The main difference between Honda and Predator is the fuel efficiency/runtime. Honda EU3000is has better fuel efficiency compared to the Predator 3500. However, Honda is significantly expensive compared to Predator generators in the same power category.

To understand which brand is suited for outdoor and indoor use, let’s compare them in depth. We will be taking Honda EU3000is and Predator 3500 for comparison.

Predator vs. Honda Generators – Brand Comparison

Predator Vs Honda Generator

Honda first started manufacturing generators in 1973. Their generators might be a bit expensive compared to the competition, but the quality of their machines is on another level.

Honda’s inverter generators produce pure sine wave power, and their fuel efficiency is second to none.

Honda brand takes pride in manufacturing long-lasting machines. Back in the 90s, we used to have HONDA EG2200X. That generator ran for ages with minimum maintenance required over the years. Honda generators range from 1000W to 7000+ watts.

Predator on the other hand started manufacturing in 1997 by Harbor Freight. Their generators are popular among hardcore campers due to their quieter operation and cheaper price.

Predator also provides all the convenience and safety features that Honda does including the CO carbon monoxide sensor. If you want to know more, check Predator History.

Which One is Quieter between Honda and Predator Generators?

As I have already mentioned, I will take the HONDA EU3000is and Predator 3500 as an example since I have used both models.

HONDA EU3000is generates 53dB of noise from 23 feet whereas Predator 3500 makes 56 to 57dB from 25 feet away.

Honda is the winner in this department. It is not like Predator will burst your ears but you will know the difference once you hear both generators.

Which One is More Powerful, Honda or Predator Generators?

Predator has been equipped with a 212cc 4-stroke overhead valve engine that put out 3500 surge watts and 3000 running watts whereas Honda Eu3000is is equipped with a 196cc HONDA GX200 engine that put out 3000 starting watts and 2800 running watts.

Though Predator delivers a bit more power compared to Honda, such is not the case with other models. Both brands make powerful generators.

Predator or Honda, Which is More Fuel-Efficient?

I compared the fuel efficiency of both the Honda EU3000is and Predator 3500 and the results are mentioned below:

  • Honda EU3000is ran 20 hours at 25% load on a 3.4 gal tank.
  • Predator 3500 ran 11.5 hours at 25% load on a 2.3 gal tank.

Although Predator has a 2.3 gal tank and Honda has a bigger 3.4 gal tank, the difference in fuel efficiency is obvious. Honda machines may be a bit expensive but are super-efficient.

Predator vs Honda Generators – Which One is Better for Camping?

Both generators put out uninterrupted electricity with a pure sine wave, both are easy on fuel, and both passed the capacity test. The difference lies in the weight and dimensions.

Predator weighs 99 pounds whereas Honda weighs 130+ pounds. With built-in wheels and a compact frame, the Predator is easier to move around and transport in the travel trailer or van.

EU3000is is a heavy generator. It is not like you won’t be able to lug it around, but you will find it difficult to transport it.

If you can manage the weight problem, Honda is the more efficient and quieter of the two generators.

Features:

Both generators feature low-oil shutoff, parallel capability, CO sensor, and overload protection.

Both generators have an electric start as well. The outlets on both models are also the same.

Warranty:

Honda offers a 3-year limited warranty on all parts. Harbor Freight Predator offers a 2-year limited warranty on emission components. The guarantee on all parts is only for 90 days.

As far as maintenance and warranty are concerned, the rate of satisfaction of Honda customers is very high.

Differences between Honda EU3000is and Predator 3500

One of the main differences is the control panel. EU3000IS features a basic control panel with basic outlets and circuit breakers whereas the Predator 3500 inverter generator features a very neat digital display to monitor runtime, output, and frequency.

Predator also comes with an electronic speed control (ESC) feature to decrease the noise and fuel consumption when the load is less. It is similar to Honda’s eco-mode.

The huge difference between both portable inverter generators is the price. Predator 3500 costs around $950+ whereas Honda Eu3000is costs up to $2800.

You will pay for the quality and durability of course, but the price difference is very significant.

Which Generator is Right For You?

If you want to purchase for occasional use on camping trips, for a home, or RV, Predator 3500 should be the choice between the two because it delivers a bit similar performance at a cheaper rate.

If you are a full-time outdoorsman, or if you want a unit for your RV or camper for full-time use, then the Honda Eu3000is should be preferred.

The reason is simple. No generator delivers more quality and durability than Honda. If you want a long-lasting machine, and if you can afford it, I would recommend Honda.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Predator the same as a Honda generator?

Although both machines have similar features, Predator generators are way louder than Honda generators and they are less fuel-efficient. Predator 3500 makes 56 to 57dB noise from 25 feet and runs for 11.5 hours at 25% load. Honda Eu3000is makes 53 to 54dB noise from 23.5 feet away and runs for 20 hours at 25% load.

Is Predator a Good Generator Brand?

Predator generators are often considered an alternative to Honda generators due to their excellent performance, decent runtime, compact frame, and affordable price. They are often preferred for camping.

How long can you run Predator 3500?

At 25% load, Predator 3500 can run for 11.5 hours on a 2.3 gal tank based on our tests.
